Overview

The Sr. Electronic Design Engineer will be based at Bruker Santa Barbara contributing directly to the design, prototyping, test and release of our market leading Atomic Force Microscopes. Responsibilities include the full range of product development from design, prototype, test, analysis and documentation of complex electronic designs for precision imaging and metrology. This position requires strong initiative, close teamwork, technical curiosity and frequent cross-functional communication.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

This position drives the evolution of AFM system control and data acquisition electronics.

  • Typical Responsibilities:
  • Generate engineering requirements
  • Define electronics architecture, interfaces and theory of operation
  • Convert high level system requirements into sub system specifications
  • Perform electronics design, analysis, prototyping and system integration.
  • Lead and participate in design reviews
  • Evaluate performance, reliability and compliance.
  • Drive technical troubleshooting and failure analysis
  • Author engineering reports and production release documentation
  • Support sustaining engineering activities.
  • Serve as a champion of DFx best practices within the organization.

Other duties as assigned.
Some travel to vendor and international Bruker sites will be required (<10%).


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Required:

  • Experience with advanced analog electronics design
  • Experience with digital electronics design (FPGA/Microprocessor) with the ability to program such devices.
  • Board and system level debugging, motion control, feedback control, data acquisition systems, system noise analysis and troubleshooting
  • Experience with OrCAD/Cadence Allegro and Altera/Quartus.
  • Capable of doing both electronic system design and detailed circuit design.
  • Capable of defining test requirements and test plan, and build out the electronic test infrastructure
  • Hard working, team oriented, bright, creative and committed to quality.
  • Generate release documentation packages including BOM’s, fabrication documentation, and assembly drawings.
  • Familiar with design and regulatory compliance standards such as IPC, ISO and CE for EMC design practices and requirements.
  • Skillful at hands-on development of product prototypes.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Work cross-functionally as to ensure DFx: Design for reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, test, cost, etc.
  • Good project management and organizational skills, being able to effectively participate on multiple development projects.
  • Willingness to mentor others as necessary.

Desired

  • Experience with electronic design for complex scientific instrumentation, metrology equipment or similar products involving high-performance control and data acquisition.
  • Strong low noise analog design experience
  • Power supply design (switching and linear), high voltage design
  • Ability to model and analyze designs using PSpice.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

 

Typical office and laboratory environment. Ability and willingness to work periodically in Class 1000 clean room with full gowning protocol.

 

PHYSICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

The ability to lift and move equipment up to 30 pounds.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of relevant industrial electronics equipment experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or equivalent.
