    An exciting opportunity is now open in the Bruker Daltonics Life Sciences Mass Spectrometry (BDAL LSMS) division for an Applications Scientist – Mass Spectrometry (MS) in Perth, Australia, to be based at a key customer site as part of an important collaboration. The position will predominantly be working on joint BDAL LSMS – key customer projects in the field of Phenomics (Metabolomics), however the position will also be required to provide instrument demonstrations & sample analyses for prospective BDAL LSMS customers, and applications & technical support and trainings to other BDAL LSMS customers in Australia and on occasion other countries in Asia-Pacific. The position requires a strong background in Mass Spectrometry, having ESI-MS (Q-TOF MS) and MALDI-MS experience is preferred and Magnetic Resonance Mass Spectrometry (MRMS) experience is desirable.  

    Responsibilities

    • To become an expert in running BDAL LSMS ESI-Q-TOF MS and MRMS systems, through extensive training (local & international), on-the-job learning and using prior experience.
    • Perform data analysis with statistical and bioinformatics software tools
    • Liaise closely with key customer site scientists to become integral in the collaborative Phenomics research projects in order to drive the mass spectrometry research component of each project
    • Be involved in publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals with key customer site scientists
    • Participate in grant proposal preparation with key customer site scientists
    • Participate in the general laboratory and BDAL LSMS instrument maintenance, maintaining the BDAL LSMS instruments in peak performing condition
    • Document all experimental records and file reports
    • Perform demonstrations and sample analyses for prospective customers using on-site BDAL LSMS instrumentation and provide expert advice to customers during the sales process, focusing on how BDAL LSMS system solutions will address and benefit the customer’s needs
    • Ensure that the BDAL LSMS instrumentation, analysis and customer demonstrations are properly prepared, in order to guarantee the highest level of customer experience in a timely manner
    • Perform on-site trainings and mentoring on BDAL LSMS instrumentation and software to other users, both at key customer site and other external sites. Training can include hands on instrument training and class room teaching
    • Provide BDAL LSMS application and method development support for customers. Perform customer support including phone & email support, as well as travel to customer sites for on-site support
    • Perform training courses on BDAL LSMS instrumentation and software for customers and in-house staff (including engineers and other service support staff) as necessary
    • Develop and maintain technical expertise on BDAL LSMS systems & software products
    • Perform and assist in the production of manuals, marketing materials and other documentation as necessary.
    • Attend applicable conferences representing BDAL LSMS and deliver oral and/or poster presentations including at Bruker workshops/seminars
    • Monthly reporting of activities
    • Participating in BDAL LSMS -internal trainings via webex to keep knowledge current.

    Qualifications

    Education and Skills

    • Masters degree or Ph.D degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry or related field is a pre-requisite
    • Minimum 3-years of hands-on user experience in operating ESI-MS (preferably Q-TOF MS) and MALDI-MS instrumentation. Experience with Bruker MS instrumentation is considered an advantage. Magnetic Resonance Mass Spectrometry (MRMS) experience/knowledge is further desirable. Core laboratory working experience is particularly useful.

    Language Skills    

    Excellent communications skills in oral and written English, must be able to write at an advanced scientific level.

     

    Computer Skills:

    Relevant office related software packages required such as Word processing, Excel and Powerpoint. Specific knowledge of the operating & data processing software for Mass Spectrometer systems is essential, and for Bruker Daltonics Mass Spectrometer systems is highly desirable.

     

    Reasoning Ability                                                    

    Good troubleshooting skills, scientific thinking and teaching skills are required.

     

    Other Skills and Abilities:

    Ability and willingness to travel nationally & internationally for including but not limited to trainings, providing internal & customer support, conference presentations.

     

    Other Qualifications: Good presentation skills.
