    Responsibilities

    Bruker is looking for an Optical Engineer to design and integrate optical elements of the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) product lines. The Optical Engineer works closely with the hardware and software teams to develop the overall optical systems architecture and implement this in our next generation products.  The responsibilities include design, develop, build and test of robust, modular optical systems for our portfolio of AFM products.  This individual will be involved in all aspects of the product development process from concept to commercialization (e.g.: technology research, proof-of-concept, design, analysis, characterization, optimization and documentation).

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

     

    This position will work primarily on optical systems or sub-systems, their design, development and integration with the overall product.

    Typical responsibilities include:

     

    • Design and development of optical systems based on optic, photonic and laser technologies
    • Specifying, selecting and qualifying optical components
    • Building and testing of prototype optical systems and work closely together with the hardware and software teams to integrate this in the full system prototype
    • Benchmark optical system performance and develop and implement test procedures
    • Productize the optical system design for robustness, ease of use, manufacturability, serviceability and regulatory compliance
    • Generate design and product documentation
    • Provide multi-discipline support to production and service by resolving technical issues related to optical parts and sub-systems

    Qualifications

    EDUCATIONAL / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

    • Candidates must have a BS degree, or higher, from an accredited program in optics, applied physics, or related field with at least 2yrs of relevant work experience; or a PhD without experience; or equivalent experience.
    • Experience in the specification, design, and evaluation of optical sub-systems utilizing active and passive optical components including lenses, mirrors, lasers, optical detectors and manual/automated methods of adjustment.
    • Hands-on experience in aligning optical systems, including infrared based systems.
    • The preferred candidate will have experience with scanning probe microscopy and design experience with infrared or quantum cascade lasers in the context of scientific instrumentation, industrial metrology or similar products.
    • System modeling experience with programs such as SolidWorks, Matlab, LabView is desired, as is experience with optical simulation tools such as ZEMAX.
    • Knowledge of problem solving methodologies, industry standards and regulations strongly desired. Ability to manage multiple projects in a dynamic, collaborative environment required.  Should be hard working, team oriented, bright, creative, driven to push the boundaries of technology!
