    Responsibilities

    SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The Senior Market Application Scientist brings a high level of scientific and technical expertise to activities associated with market development, business development, sales, application development, and product development. The Senior Market Application Scientist is an evangelist for the product and an ambassador from users back to Bruker. As a recognized expert within a market community, the Senior Market  Application Scientist is a leader within Bruker in the development of new and exciting ways to use the instruments, a partner in high impact innovation within the company, and works with product management to define market needs and develop products. As subject matter expert, the Senior Market  Application Scientist works in direct support of sales channels and support, including in the creation of a knowledge base and self-help resources. The Senior Market  Application Scientist works across many products in support of specific market(s), allowing them to build bridges and assist market management in executing market strategy. The Senior Market  Application Scientist is particularly important for direct interactions with customers that build lifetime customer value and programmatic interactions with sales channels that build market capacity and confidence.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    % of time: 20%. Provide custom solutions to customers and clients, including custom calibrations, workflows, software, and consulting.

    % of time: 30%. Act as a subject matter expert for the sales channels, service channels, and directly to customers and clients by addressing scientific and technical questions, proving demonstrations, maintaining knowledge bases, and creating educational and tutorial materials.

    % of time: 15%. Conduct original research using Bruker products and present that research in peer reviewed journals, conferences proceedings, white papers, application notes, and sales support material.

    % of time: 20%. Build and maintain market community, customer loyalty and brand identity by organizing and participating in market events, attending conferences, participating in professional service activities, and assisting in the creation of marketing materials.

    % of time: 15%. Innovate in collaboration with product management by participating or leading research and development projects, creating market requirements documents, managing beta testing, and organizing market research or voice of customer campaigns.   


     

    ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Provide custom solutions for clients, including custom calibrations, workflows, software, and consulting.

    The Senior Market Application Scientist provides custom solutions in support of sales. They work with Regional Sales Managers and the sales channels to scope, quote, and provide solutions directly to the client. This includes the following:  

    • creating custom calibrations from publicly available or customer samples using any of Bruker available calibration software and any other open calibration solutions as appropriate for the customer needs
    • analysis of customer samples and feasibility studies using Bruker products for the purposes of assessing the most appropriate technology, method, calibration, and workflows to fit customer needs
    • characterization of customer samples to create reference standards following established procedures and scientific norms, either through measurement using appropriate instrumentation or the direction of contract or collaborative laboratories
    • workflow mapping and analysis of customer processes and procedures, devising original and innovative workflows and procedures to meet client needs
    • designing and creating or direction the creation of custom software solutions to meet client needs
    • communicate directly with clients through presentations, verbally, reports, and video
    • conduct strategic market assessments of new methods, technologies, software, and calibrations developed as custom solutions for clients to determine the return on investment and roadmap for wider implementation
    • manage, develop, and support new factory calibrations from conception through production
    • provide high-level solutions to key accounts including consulting, custom solutions, technical and scientific support, and direct engagement
    • Report monthly on new application, calibration, and other custom activity, tracking adoption of application through time
    • Continuously maintain records of customer interaction in salesforce or other appropriate CRM systems
    • Continuously maintain communication with sales and service channels on the progress of custom solutions, including using service ticketing systems

     

     

    Act as a subject matter expert for the sales channels, service channels, and directly to customers and clients by addressing scientific and technical questions, proving demonstrations, maintaining knowledge bases, and creating educational and tutorial materials.

     

    The Senior Market Application Scientist is a recognized expert in their market and acts as an ambassador between the market and the product. Tasks include:

    • identify and communicated market needs, including possible USPs and value propositions to Product Management and Marketing staff.
    • develop learning objectives for the training of sales channels and customer training
    • training customers in safety, instrument use, sample preparation, and software.
    • deliver the highest-level client consulting and answering the most ambiguous and important technical and scientific questions from the sales channels and clients
    • provide in-situ demonstrations and technical presentations for large accounts and key accounts.
    • development of content for a knowledge base and self-help for clients, sales channels, and service
    • collaborate with to management to ensure products and services are meeting established scientific norms and practices, to act as a confidential internal expert, and to assist in strategic assessments of new methods and technologies
    • Report monthly on sales and service activity, including on new application notes and other products created in support of sales and service
    • Continuously update CRMs and ticketing systems
    • Assist in the management of an instrument loner pool in accordance with policies and procedures, ensuring that all loners are properly account for, that all recipients have completed the proper paperwork and have proper safety training, and that all instruments are recovered in the correct amount of time.

     

    Conduct original research using Bruker products and present that research in peer reviewed journals, conferences proceedings, white papers, application notes, and sales support material.

     

    The Senior Market Application Scientist is a recognized expert in a technical or market area. They are expected to identify scientific or technical problems and conduct original research to resolve these problems with little direction or assistance. Tasks include:  

    • work with clients on cutting-edge, uncertain, or controversial applications
    • develop and present new methods and applications
    • validate instrument performance in previously unknown situations
    • validate and demonstrate methods, technology, products, software, or workflows through case studies or feasibility studies
    • independently identify research questions with major impact society, technology, theory, industry, or other important technological or scientific fields
    • design and execute scientific studies, including the collecting of samples, preparation of samples, analysis of samples, manipulation and visualization of data, and interpretation of results
    • collaborate with collogues or customers to achieve scientific or technical goals
    • communicate results as in peer-reviewed journals, internal reports, white papers, conference proceedings, conference presentations, posters, books, edited volumes, application notes, white papers, or marketing materials
    • Work with the team to developed shared strategic research focuses, meet regularly to discuss progress and strategy
    • Report regularly to senior management on the process of scientific studies, publications, and other documents

     

    Build and maintain market community, customer loyalty and brand identity by organizing and participating in market events, attending conferences, participating in professional service activities, and assisting in the creation of marketing materials.

     

    The Senior Market Scientist works at the highest levels in their profession to build a community around the Bruker brand. Tasks include:

    • participate in commissions, boards, committees, and other governing bodies to set standards that coincide with Bruker’s market goals and adhere to the highest scientific standards
    • host meetings, conferences, short courses, workshops, webinars, courses, and online courses the introduce, reinforce, and create expertise in concepts, methodologies, and technologies
    • create and maintain online community spaces and content, including technical discussion forums, social media pages and posts, inspirational content, marker focused web pages, application tutorials, and other media
    • give keynotes, talks, papers, and other scientific communications that reinforce the brand and builds community among users
    • work with sales and marketing to set customer engagement goals and design engagement and brand identity campaigns appropriate for their area of expertise
    • Report monthly on market development activities and give regular feedback and VOC on specific markets
    • Continuously add or update leads, contact information, and other client information into the CRM and ticketing systems

     

     

    Innovate in collaboration with product management by participating or leading research and development projects, creating market requirements documents, managing beta testing, and organizing market research or voice of customer campaigns.

     

    The Senior Market Application Scientists is the voice of the customer, representing market needs and expectations to the product management, engineering, and research and development teams. They expected to contribute to Bruker’s market position through continuous improvement, innovation, and the creation of market disruption.

    • undertake major research and development projects in conjunction with product management and research and development teams
    • participate or lead product development teams and to serve as product owner on a one or more SCRUM teams
    • act as market expert and subject matter expert to product management for the development of product requirements, market requirements, and throughout the process of product development and validation
    • in collaboration with market segment management undertake market research, customer visits, and voice of customer programs to assess current products, create marketing material, develop market requirements, and contribute to the continuous improvement of products
    • work within the product development structure to contribute to innovative products, methods, and products
    • work with product management, engineering, and research and development teams to develop and test high impact innovation ideas
    • validate new instrumentation and methods through alpha testing, beta testing, and field trials
    • manage beta testing programs including recruiting beta testers, distributing beta software and hardware, conducting surveys, collecting feedback, and composing reports
    • communicate scientific standards and requirements to product management and research and development through position papers, presentations, white papers, participating in development teams, consulting,
    • participate in the strategic planning and budgeting process

    Qualifications

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    • Expert technical knowledge in a scientific discipline of art, archeology, geology, agricultural sciences, metals, semiconductors, materials science, or other closely related field aligned with the market focus goals of Bruker Nano Analytics
    • Expert technology knowledge in the application of X-Ray Fluorescence to scientific or technical problems; application of additional methodologies to solve scientific and technical issues encouraged
    • Excellent verbal, written, and visual communication skills, particularly in the presentation of scientific data and concepts in clear and easy to understand forms
    • Proven ability to communicate technical and scientific concepts through peer-reviewed publication, white papers, abstracts, conference proceedings, presentations, and application notes
    • Proven ability to design and execute scientific studies that include sample collection, preparation, analysis using scientific instrumentation, data analysis, and manipulation, communication of results and implications in verbal, written, and visual form
    • The ability to assess client workflows and implement scientific procedures in accordance with recognized standards
    • Acknowledged scientific, technical, and market leadership
    • The ability to travel up to 50% of the time.

     

    EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

    • Advanced University Degree (Ph.D. preferred) in geology, archeology, art, mathematics, physics, museum science, or another related field OR
    • University Degree AND 10 years of directly related progressive continuous experience.
    • Minimum 5 years’ experience in the directly related field
    • Previous experience as an application scientist or closely related field
