Responsible for driving the production transfer of designated Bruker Fluorescence Microscopy products engineering to manufacturing, and providing manufacturing engineering support of these products through their End of Life, as well as complete Product Life Cycle support for new products.
Leading the transfer of Bruker FM products from Engineering to Production
Spending appropriate time hands on with the FM Manufacturing and Engineering team to become fully knowledgeable about the design, assembly and test of the fluorescent microscopy products
Be a leader for Manufacturing by demonstrating proficiency in Manufacturing FM products
Be a leader for Manufacturing by working hands on with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Product leaders to design and teach to appropriate staff QA/QC test standards and protocols for FM products
Monitor QA/QC test data for evaluation of manufacturing personnel and protocols to recommend appropriate action for achieving highest quality delivered product
Working with FM Manufacturing and Engineering to identify and address product documentation deficiencies in a timely and complete manner
Train Bruker assembly and test staff as needed
Closely monitor production to help ensure procedures are followed and provide on-the-floor troubleshooting assistance.
Ensure shipped products meet required specifications and any non-conformances are resolved.
Working with Engineering to implement DFx (Design for Manufacturing, Test, Reliability, and Service) solutions before production release.
Working with the Engineering and Operations team to develop and execute sourcing, manufacturing and test strategies
Developing, releasing and managing manufacturing documentation, tooling, and test fixtures.
Leading product and process improvement activities (e.g., improvements to product design and assembly / test processes, lean manufacturing efforts)
Identifying and executing opportunities for Best Cost Manufacturing and Gross Margin improvements, including outsourcing / insourcing / re-sourcing, value engineering, scrap reduction, and rework reduction / yield improvement
Resolving sustaining engineering issues from production floor, global vendors, and field service.
Optimizing material / production planning to achieve cycle time, delivery and inventory objectives
Developing and executing a manufacturing quality improvement strategy through final functional verification process (Final Test), managing non-conforming parts in process (NCMR), and closed loop corrective action (CLCR)
Initial (1-3 years) prioritization will be toward specific projects, including the transfer of selected products from engineering to operations and partnering with GSM and Engineering to drive significant CoGs reduction.
Provide sustaining engineering support to released products including change management, product documentation updates, production tooling and fixture development and maintenance, quality control and improvement, and timely resolution of customer product problems (25%)
Work with Engineering to support new product development and release, including the generation and control of necessary product and process documentation (10%)
Work with, and along-side, manufacturing staff to ensure on time delivery of product (this is critical)
Establish and execute updated Best Cost Manufacturing and sourcing strategies, including focus on necessary product and assembly outsourcing, Gross Margin improvement (20%)
Work with Operations (Procurement, Production) to optimize materials management to meet quarterly revenue targets, and on-time product delivery requirements while minimizing inventory (10%)
Develop and implement product and process improvement activities, including lean manufacturing (10%)
Responsibilities will also include working with business unit operations and cross-functional teams to:
Help manage manufacturing operations, including procurement, product assembly and test, production control and planning, and in-process inventory control to meeting shipment, quality, and inventory targets
Develop and execute strategic organizational and budgetary plans, policies and procedures to achieve near term and long-term operational and business unit goals
~40% travel required for visiting customers and vendors
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Proven ability to make meaningful technical contributions in a high tech design + manufacturing environment (critically assessing product designs, reliability, evaluation of suppliers’ technical and manufacturing capabilities, assessing designs for manufacturability and cost effectiveness, etc.)
Experience with the outsourcing of systems and higher level assemblies (HLAs)
Knowledgeable in continuous improvement, safety improvements, use of KPI metrics, lean manufacturing.
Strong analytical skills, ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of changing situations under stress
Strong interpersonal skills requiring the ability to resolve conflicting interests and obtain cooperation with internal and external suppliers and customers
Strong project management, leadership and organizational skills; ability and willingness to lead key projects and initiatives outside immediate job scope (as needed)
Strong written and verbal communication skills
MRP / ERP experience preferred (SAP experience a plus)
Proficiency in a 3D CAD package preferably SolidWorks, MS Office suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint
Ability to lift 60 lbs
Degrees in an engineering or technical field (e.g., Optical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering) - Graduate Degree is a plus.
2-5 years of proven experience working as a manufacturing or development engineer (or in related field) in a product manufacturing organization, preferably related to the manufacture of products having meaningful mechanical, electronic, and software design components.
Hands-on experience with the design, build, test and troubleshooting scanning, fluorescence microscopes or similiar precision product.
Getting this experience while working in a commercial environment (e.g., microscope manufacturing) is strongly preferred
Experience with multiphoton microscopy, confocal microscopy, FRAP (Fluorescence Recovery After Photobleaching) and FLIP (Fluorescence Loss In Photobleaching) techniques. Demonstrated experience in Instrument design of scanning microscopes
