Luxendo was founded a as spin-off of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in 2015. The company develops and manufactures proprietary light-sheet fluorescence microscopy instruments based on the licensed SPIM (Selective Plane Illumination Microscopy) technology.

SPIM microscopes avoid sample phototoxicity by sequentially illuminating a stack of small slices of the organism, allowing scientists to observe living organisms for an extended / longer period without photo damage. Within two years, three different microscope systems were developed and launched, addressing various applications in live cell imaging.
