This position is responsible for leading selected projects in the internal testing and applications laboratory for nanoindentation and nanomechanical testing.  Will assist the development applications manager in directing and training the other employees in the lab.  This includes defining the technical scope of projects and selected instrument demonstrations, ensuring that testing results are communicated properly, and helping to ensure that the work being performed by the Applications Engineers in the lab is optimized to serve the business unit goals. 



  • Provide expert user input for system design and implementation considerations.
  • Develop novel applications with core technologies to provide customers a whole product solution. Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals, applications notes and present in academic settings.
  • Provide expert support for the sales applications engineers.
  • System level evaluation for products during development phases including functional performance of different modes, usability, system stability, and Define and document experiment protocols, and report results to the project team. Verify ambiguous issues reported by other users.
  • Produce detailed product specifications with measurement procedures.


  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of Hysitron products.
  • Support sales, marketing, production, and service as requested. Help technical writers to generate content on manuals and support notes for various products.
  • Ability to work with members of management and customers in a professional manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.



  • 3+ years user experience with nanomechanical testing preferred. Strong technical aptitude and ability to learn and understand new technology.
  • Excellent follow through skills.
  • Technical writing skills



Requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD degree in the field of Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Biology or Engineering. Peer reviewed publications in nanomechanical testing or related fields preferred. Supervisory experience is also preferred.
