Sr. Staff Optical Engineer:


The Fluorescence Microscopy (FM) engineering group of the Nano Surfaces Business of Bruker Corporation in Middleton, WI is looking for an Optical Design Engineer to define, design, develop and test the next generation of Optical tools. FM develops world class products for Neuroscience(Multi-photon), cell biology (Confocal) and super resolution microscopy(SML.)  The Optical Design Engineer will work closely with product management, scientists and engineers to architect the requirements for a variety of projects in a highly collaborative and fast-paced environment. The Optical Design Engineer will provide technical leadership as part of a cross functional product team working on complex opto-mechanical product initiatives. They will design, develop and test optical systems.  The position requires system-level expertise and interacts with hardware and software design teams to assist in overall development of optical systems.

Tasks include conceptualization and definition of optical paths, specifying, selecting and qualifying active and passive optical components, developing and benchmarking system performance models, developing and implementing test procedures, and evaluating and selecting appropriate test instrumentation.


  • Research, develop, and design optical solutions & systems pertaining to our products.  (40%)
  • Design mechanical components, systems, and product enclosures for functional support and operation of optical systems.  (35%)
  • Provide consulting, mentoring, and guidance to production and system integration staff.  (10%)
  • Perform prototype assembly and verification of optical/mechanical systems.  (5%)
  • Enter and maintain database information related to optical and mechanical designs.  (5%)
  • Specify and/or coordinate optical component design & fabrication with suppliers.  (3%)
  • Read, study, and explore leading edge biological & neuroscience research papers describing optical systems and designs that apply to our products & customer interests.  (2%)


  • Optical principles & sophisticated optical knowledge.
  • Computer Aided Design (Zemax, Autodesk Mechanical Desktop, Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks).
  • Strong general computer skills and database understanding.
  • Design for Manufacturing.


  • Experience in concurrent mechanical & optical design.
  • Strong optical imaging knowledge & background.
  • Experience in taking a lead role in optical systems development.
  • Experience in microscopy imaging and low-signal detection techniques.




  • Typically requires a minimum of 12 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering, 8 years with a Master’s degree, or 5 years with a PhD.
