THE POSITION:  Based in the Business Unit Development center in Silicon Valley, the Head of Optical Metrology Applications Development leads the development of applications in targeted market segments.  The position is responsible for direct management of the Applications Development team and works closely with Product Management, Engineering and Technology Development, Service, Marketing Communications and Sales to ensure that the business is effectively identifying, developing, supporting and selling products in a way that enables further growth and market share gains.


The Head of Optical Metrology Applications Development will develop, collect and report on emerging customer applications to product management, will provide input for new product development, and will align internal expertise to target market segments and applications. This leadership role owns the generation of technical content and repository of competitive information, dissemination of “how to win competitively” to the field, and communicates this competitive information to the engineering and product management teams


The position manages the team’s travel to technical conferences, and creates an environment to publish application notes, technical papers and new applications of new and existing products. The Head of Optical Metrology Applications Development will work closely with Marketing Communications to deliver technical content for marketing campaigns and collateral creation, and with regional sales to train and deploy applications knowledge into the field teams.


Specific responsibilities include the following:

  • Effectively manage development applications staff to identify target applications and develop solutions, technical materials, sales training, competitive intelligence and customer evangelization to support growth to deliver on the strategic product roadmap for the growth goals.
  • Coordinate applications knowledge and train to meet the target market segment requirements company wide.
  • Identify, create, publish and productize new applications to use on our products based on recognized market requirements.
  • Create marketing communications materials, application notes, support notes, training videos, etc.
  • Generate and oversee the conception and protection of intellectual property (patents and trade secrets) and their protection, and evaluate existing IP landscape relative to products and roadmap.
  • Visit customers to build awareness & differentiate on applications.
  • Support staffing and teaching workshops.
  • Identify and manage strategic collaborations relationships and budgets
  • Active participation in annual strategic process.
  • Manage and publish quarterly the Won/Lost report.
  • Training of new, intermediate, and advanced field and factory employees on all aspects of product theory, operation, and competition.
  • Attend & present at technical conferences, and tradeshows.
  • Maintain image and demo database by collecting files from the WW sales apps team.


PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: The Head of Optical Metrology Applications Development will hold a minimum of an MS degree in physics, chemistry, materials science or equivalent, with a higher degree strongly preferred. A strong academic background in optics, optical design or opto-mechanical design is absolutely required. S/he will have ten-plus years of relevant experience in the area of micro dimensional inspection and measurement for manufacturing process control, or equivalent experience.  Previous managerial experience and sales, customer service/support experience are required competencies being sought for the role.


Specific candidate requirements for the Head of Optical Metrology Applications Development include the following:

  • Test experience with non-contact/optical metrology products such as laser scanning, 2D laser profiler scanners, confocal systems, through focus systems, fringe projection/structured illumination or other methods of optical inspection is required.
  • S/he will have specialist product knowledge of surface inspection products and applications to a level of proficiency as to add value as the leader of the division’s applications scientists.
  • Ability to manage and organize a group of 3-6 highly technical direct reports and influence WW sales apps team.
  • Experience in writing patent applications, reviewing competitive IP landscape and identifying IP opportunities is preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with employees and executives at all levels of the corporation and establish and maintain strong relationships internally and externally
  • Self-starter who can simultaneously manage multiple internal and external initiatives/projects and deliver outstanding results
  • A critical thinker and problem solver through leadership and hands-on management
  • Process and data driven with a pragmatic approach to getting the job and delivering high quality as first priority
  • Thinks quickly on his/her feet, is practical and “street smart” – and wants to win
  • Experienced with customer interaction and development of commercial products in small to moderate volumes and to leverage prior common platforms and designs
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills required
  • Must be able to travel both domestically and internationally on short notice (up to 40% travel will be required)



Role is based in San Jose, CA with significant travel required (35% to 40%).

Ability to work in a fast paced technical facility.
