Responsibilities

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer will work in a variety of areas associated with the design of Bruker’s Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) product line. The Senior Staff Engineer will be responsible for the design of critical sub-assemblies which integrate into larger research and industrial-class metrology systems. This key position primarily involves the design of precision positioning systems, oftentimes piezo-based, but also motorized, and the integration of optical and imaging capability into these positioning systems. The candidate will have extensive practical experience in precision mechanical engineering along with the ability to coordinate with a wider range of disciplines such as electronics, optics and software.  The position will involve all aspects of the product development process, including proof-of-concept design, development of engineering specifications, design and analysis, test and characterization, and generation of production documentation.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

This position will work primarily on the design of precision electromechanical assemblies/systems:

 

Typical tasks will be roughly comprised of:

   

  • High level proof-of-concept incremental and next generation critical design of mechanical assemblies and sub-assemblies –25%
  • Hands-on and/or direct supervision of subordinate Mechanical Design - 40%
  • Engineering Testing and evaluation of designs -20%
  • Test Fixtures and Tooling-5%
  • Generation of production documentation, direct or subordinate supervision of– 10%

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Proposing, designing and prototyping proof of concept and incremental mechanical sub- assemblies
  • Producing a design that meets the Market and Engineering requirements for performance, design-for-manufacturability, testability, and reliability
  • Leadership in driving best-of-practice design, analysis, and/or manufacturing methods of such assemblies
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

 

PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:  office/laboratory environment

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

Required skills and experience

  • Strong background and proven track record in mechanical and preferably systems design of precision instruments of an opto-mechanical, and/or electro-mechanical nature
  • Extensive experience in the design of precision positioning systems utilizing actuators such as piezos, voice coils and motor driven stages and associated sensor technologies such as capacitive, strain gages, optical methods, etc.
  • Solid understanding of basic control systems theory
  • Solid understanding and experience with basic optical and imaging system design
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills is essential

Desired skills and experience

  • Having had a technical leadership role in the design of precision positioning systems and/or atomic force microscopes in particular
  • Excellent understanding of the material properties of concern in precision instrument design, such as thermal drift, friction and creep 
  • Experience in the characterization and testing of precision positioning systems and component parts using linear displacement interferometers and vibrometers.
  • Proficiency with mechanical drawing CAD programs; experience with dimensioning standards and practices such as GD&T
  • Experience with the wide range of precision manufacturing technologies (machining, EDM, molding etc)
  • Experience validating and optimizing designs by modeling using FEA programs such as ANSYS.
  • Experience with ZEMAX or other ray tracing programs
  • Project management experience or strong interest/capability is a plus

EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 

Candidates should possess an MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.  Candidates with degrees in other fields of Physical Sciences or Engineering (e.g., Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering) or who possess a BS degree and substantially meet the requirements above, will be considered. Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of directly applicable post-graduate commercial experience or 12 years (graduate and post-graduate inclusive) of directly applicable experience in a research/academic environment.
